Belgium extends Roberto Martinez contract until 2022 World Cup

The Belgian Football Association has announced the contract extension of head coach Roberto Martinez until 2022 World Cup.

Martinez whose initial contract was from 2016 until after Euro 2020 will continue to lead the Belgium squad until after the 2022 World Cup the FA has said.

According to the FA, the extension was occasioned by the postponement of the Euro 2020 tournament that was moved to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic and with the next World Cup taking place in Qatar in November and December 2022.

Belgium finished third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia under Roberto Martinez.

Belgium are currently on top of the FIFA ranking after winning 10 of their games in qualifying for Euro 2020. They have been drawn in Group B of the tournament alongside Denmark, Finland and Russia.
